  • Iran–Israel War: A Deepening Middle East Conflict

The conflict between Iran and Israel traces back decades, rooted in ideological, political, and regional power struggles. Iran, a major Shia-led power in the Middle East, has long supported allied militant groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, opposing Israeli security interests and U.S. influence in the region. Israel, backed by the United States, views Iran’s nuclear ambitions and military reach as an existential threat, leading to periodic confrontations and proxy clashes over the years.

Tensions escalated sharply in February–March 2026, when Israeli and U.S. forces launched coordinated airstrikes deep into Iranian territory, targeting military installations and leadership structures. These operations reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior commanders, marking one of the most dramatic escalations of hostilities yet.

In response, Iran’s military fired missiles and drones at Israeli and U.S. positions in the broader Middle East, leading to exchanges of strikes and growing civilian casualties on both sides. Markets, transport, and daily life were disrupted as fears grew of a widespread regional war.

The current conflict goes beyond direct military engagements; it taps into longstanding animosities, competing regional alliances, and global superpower involvement. Efforts at diplomacy and ceasefires have historically been fragile, and recent events underscore how quickly tensions can spiral into open warfare with far-reaching consequences for regional stability.
